Costumes Props + Character Design
Julian’s current character and costuming work explores the creative potential of upcycling by transform recycled or repurposed materials into imaginative pieces. most of the costumes have been made to showcase what can be made from upcycled materials during school halloween celebrations, but you will also find prototypes for web series and drag costumes.
“The Universe” utilized items donated to the school makerspace’s “trash to treasure” bin. Items included sci-fi magazines, fabric, cardboard, and thread for their 2020 school halloween costume.
“Force of Nature” upcycled a stained work jumpsuit. The piece features a crosscut of nature from core of the earth to space.
Rain and Rainbow costumes were made for the school’s “Iconic Duo” day. Julian made the rain outfit and the rainbow hat Ms. Dove is wearing.
This tornado was made for a department-wide “Wizard of Oz” group costume. Julian’s favorite part are the milk carton houses.
Their older projects emphasize a more fantastical, at times grotesque, experiment in creating gendered characters. They explored sci-fi tropes of gendered extraterrestrials.
Julian’s Drag Persona “Louis PrimaDonna” is a nod to the Italian goofy crooners that serenaded their childhood. Costume is upcycled from an ex boyfriend’s old suit.
“Frazzle” was made for a web series that was canceled due to COVID-19. He’s still Mx. Rich’s makerspace companion for students nervous on their first week of school.
